I won't go into detail, because Kilo-5 is a genuinely good read and I don't want to spoil it for you, but some of the messages in the series are 'smash-them-over-the-head-with-a-gravity-hammer' subtle. Now, in the Kilo-5 trilogy Traviss portrays established characters in ways that hadn't been seen before. For Halo, he is revered because he basically set the standard that all following additions to the lore are held to. Personally, I don't think its fair to compare Nylund to Traviss - Nylund basically created the lore backbone and foundation of the Halo canon, and is (rightly so) held up as one of the great science fiction authors. Or simply, if you’re in the mood to understand what on Earth is going on in the original three Halo games, this book is for you.Oh wow, this is going to get some. Long story short, I highly recommend this audiobook if you’re in the mood for an action packed, science fiction adventure that takes unexpected turns. You could think of Ghosts as part one of a “quadrilogy” or just a prequel but either way, it sets the scene perfectly for the events of the next three books. Knowing that those books are spiritual sequels to this one makes everything that happens in this book all the more exciting. I’ve already listened to them before and I’m looking forward to listening to them again now that I’ve finished Ghosts of Onyx. If you’re doing the chronological marathon then you’ll know that the next three books are the Kilo Five trilogy, written by Karen Travis. Starting with Halo: Cryptum and ending with Shadows of Reach just before Halo Infinite gets released this winter. I’m currently attempting to listen to all of the Halo novels in chronological order. And if you’re a Halo fan like I am, I think this book and some of the others are really worth listening to if you want to understand how certain characters got where they are in the games. Books like Halo: First Strike and Halo: Broken Circle both fill this plot gap. It’s part of a few books that really help you understand what was going on in the background of and in between the first three games. Lore-wise this book fills in a gap in plot that the games don’t ever think to touch on. The performances are spot on and I love the accents the narrator gives the Elites in the story.
